Faculty Council Chair-Elect

I am honored to be nominated for the position of Faculty Council Chair elect. I have spent the past 20 years at the University of Maryland School of Nursing (SON) either as a student or faculty member and have had the opportunity to work across campuses, programs and departments during that time.  I am an active member of the school community having served on several committees in the past including the Faculty Council and am currently on the Undergraduate Admissions and Entry Level Curriculum Committees.  I am a member of several national organizations including the Association for Public Health Nurse Educators (ACHNE), American Public Health Association (APHA) and Sigma.  I am also active in my community where I serve on the Shady Grove Adventist Nurse Residency Program Advisory Board and was most recently appointed a Commissioner for Health with the Montgomery County Health Department.  I have recently completed my doctoral studies and am looking forward to pursuing my research interests and becoming more involved with the school community.  I believe my history with the SON, my background and experiences provide me with a unique perspective which I would use to serve the faculty and for the betterment of the SON community.

Examples of my experiences include serving with the UMB Faculty Senate (present), Council of University System Faculty (CUSF) (executive committee member and now secretary), admissions committee for SON, CIPES ( Committee for Interprofessional and Interdisciplinary Education) at USG, liaison from Faculty Senate to Faculty Council, past chair of the technology sub-committee of Faculty Council ( no longer active), and more. I would like to serve on the Entry Level Curriculum Committee to work collaboratively with others to foster quality content and instruction across entry level/baccalaureate programs. I have years of clinical experience and teaching undergraduates/graduate students. In addition, I have worked extensively in health programs administration in the public and private sector where I developed, implemented and evaluated curriculum and initiatives, such as cultural diversity training for nurses and physicians. I will bring my experiences to the Entry Level Curriculum Committee and contribute to the University's commitment to quality nursing education. I am motivated to give back to nursing education and by a desire for greater involvement in our governance processes. I believe in governance as an essential structure in the School of Nursing to offer leadership and oversight to our shared pursuits of teaching, learning, and research. I volunteered as a professional advisor at the Student Success Center (SSC) for students with an interest in Informatics.

I am a part-time Nursing Informatics Faculty member since July 2018  and currently maintain certification in Informatics Nursing, Oncology Nursing and Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialist. My other part-time job is the Staff Educator at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins where I have been since 2004. Prior to that position, I taught at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing as a full time Faculty member for fourteen years. I am familiar with nursing students and their needs both as a student and as a working nurse. I would like to be a member of the Masters Judiciary Committee to help with decision making for our students.

I recently joined UMSON in the AGPCNP program, after several years of service as a tenured Associate Professor and NP Program Director in the BS-DNP and MS-DNP programs at Salisbury University.  I previously served on their Health Professions Student Behavior Committee, which acted as the judicial board for students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs within the departments of Health Sciences and Nursing.

I have an understanding of the DNP curriculum through both serving in the past on the DNP Curriculum Committee and in having taught in the Family Nurse Practitioner program since 2011 and in the DNP core and project courses.
