UMSON Curriculum Committee

The University of Maryland School of Nursing’s Curriculum Committees meet monthly to review and approve all proposals for curriculum additions, eliminations, and major and minor revisions.

To submit proposals for new courses, major or minor revisions to existing courses, or elimination of existing courses for inclusion on future Curriculum Committee agenda(s), please:

  1. Reference the definitions below to determine the nature of the course proposal.
  2. Reference the Submission Deadline Requirements below to determine when proposals for new or major revisions can be available to students to register.
  3. Visit the UMSON Intranet and see the content under Courses, Specialties, and Certificates to review the guidelines and flowchart and download and complete the appropriate Proposal for Introduction, Change, or Elimination form.
  4. Draft a Word document responding to the Checklist on the last page of the Proposal for Introduction, Change, or Elimination form.
  5. Submit proposals for new courses, major revisions, and eliminations to the department chair(s) and associate dean(s) for review and approval to proceed.
  6. Contact the respective academic program office, listed below, and include the Proposal for Introduction, Change, or Elimination form, the Word document responding to the checklist, and the syllabi. A team member will respond and provide available dates to present your proposal and information required to attend the meeting. Proposals that apply to one or more programs must be reviewed and approved by all committees, as appropriate.

Definitions

New courses: Developing new courses may result in significant departmental workload implications and will need to consider projected enrollment estimates; curricular alignment; and simulation, lab, and technology resources. To be approved, new courses must support the UMSON mission and curricular needs and be validated by internal and external data and trends.

Major course revisions: Require a catalog change to the course’s Student User Friendly System (SURFS). These may include description, objectives, title, number, credits, list of prerequisites or corequisite courses, format (face to face, online, hybrid, synchronous lecture/didactic, or clinical) or grade mode (letter grade or pass/fail).

Minor course revisions: Do not require prior approval from the department chair(s) or associate dean(s) but must be approved by the respective curriculum committee prior to implementation. These include changes to evaluation and grading criteria.

Basic course revisions: Do not require curriculum committee review. These include edits to syllabi to enhance readability, excluding those made to the course description, objectives, or title; changes in textbook editions; rubrics; assignment deadlines; and course content that aligns with approved syllabi.

Elimination of a course: This action eliminates the course from SURFS.

Submission Deadline Requirements

UMSON is subject to numerous requirements, including but not limited to those set by the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC), the Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON), the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), and the UMB registrar.

UMSON requires the timely submission of a complete course proposal packet, in accordance with deadlines established by the UMB registrar. It is recommended that you begin the process 60 days prior to any deadlines to allow for the time necessary to meet with School leadership and curriculum committee(s), complete the full packet, and allow for any issues/problems that may arise.

New course proposals, major revisions, and elimination: Proposals for new courses, major revisions to existing courses, or elimination of existing courses require catalog changes and therefore must meet the following deadlines to be implemented the subsequent academic year:

April registration for summer/fall courses:

  • Department chairs(s) and associate dean by Sept. 1 (prior year)
  • Curriculum committee chair by Nov. 1 (prior year)
  • Director of academic administration, OAD, by Jan. 15

November registration for spring courses:

  • Department chairs(s) and associate dean by April 1
  • Curriculum committee chair by May 1
  • Director of academic administration, OAD, by July 1
