We are thrilled to extend our warmest congratulations to you on your admission to the University of Maryland School of Nursing. Your dedication and hard work have brought you to this exciting moment, and we are honored to have you join our esteemed community.

As you prepare to embark on this transformative journey, there are just a few more steps to complete before you begin classes. To ensure a smooth transition and to address any questions or concerns you may have, the Office of Student and Academic Services is pleased to offer monthly chats.

These chats serve as an invaluable resource, providing you with the guidance and support you need to navigate the final steps of your admission process. Please see a list of the admitted students chats below.

Note that the information below does not apply to PhD students, who should follow these PhD-specific instructions from the Graduate School.

Admitted Student Checklist

✓ Respond to our offer of admission.

To confirm your seat, you must submit the following within two weeks of your dated acceptance letter:

  1. a non-refundable $200 payment to reserve you seat which can be applied to your tuition upon enrollment (not required for PhD or Coursework Only students)
  2. a confirmation form

✓ Setup UMID and review laptop requirements.

UMID Creation: the UMID is your unique UMB user name, and grants access to many UMB systems, including email

  • Set up your UMID Account which is required for the completion of the remaining steps
  • Once created, your email account will be the primary source of all SON and UMB communication
  • Please review information about the timing, creation, validation, and access below:
    • Create your UMID before proceeding with steps 3 through 7.
    • Allow at least 2 business days for UMID creation
    • Your email account will be the primary source of all SON and UMB communication. It can take a few days after you have paid your seat deposit (via the accepted student page) for your email account to be created. Once it has been created, you will receive an email with the subject "Welcome to Office 365 - University of Maryland, Baltimore - Action Needed" Note that this may end up in your spam or junk email folder. The email will inform you of your new email address and a specific step you will need to complete to validate and activate your email.
    • Once your email has been created, you will need to log into with your UMID and password to validate and make your email account active. If you go there and this option is not yet available, your email account has not been created and is awaiting processing. Once these steps have been completed, you will be able to log in to send and receive emails using your UMaryland account at

You will also need to comply with our laptop requirement.

You will be required to have a laptop that meets UMSON’s minimum technology requirements (see laptop minimum specifications) and can be brought to class for use in classroom assignments. If you need to purchase a laptop, the cost may be included with your financial aid cost of attendance package because it is a program requirement.

✓ Review information about financial aid, residency, and health insurance.

Review your financial aid package:

If you haven’t already done so, complete:

  1. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA): It’s free and is necessary to qualify for any need-based financial aid packages (i.e., grants, loans, and scholarships).

  2. Application for In-State Classification: This form is necessary if you wish to be considered for in-state classification.

  3. Student Health Insurance Options and Waiver: Select a health insurance plan or opt out with the health insurance waiver form.

Educational Support and Disability Services: If you need to request academic accommodation for a disability, please contact the UMB Office of Educational Support and Disability Services at 410-706-5889 well in advance of the start of the semester. Please be sure to review all of the policies and procedures regarding accommodations.

MSN Specialties

  • You are welcome to register once registration opens for new students. Please reference the academic calendar for dates.
  • You should receive detailed information from your academic advisor prior to registration opening. If you have not heard from your advisor and/or have additional questions, please contact your academic advisor directly. Your advisor’s name can be found in your admissions letter. Their contact information can be found by using the directory.


  • Registration will take place at Orientation where more information and assistance will be provided. Please see Step 6 for more information regarding Orientation.
  • If you do not make it to Orientation, please reach out to your academic advisor or the specialty director for your specialty.
  • If you have not heard from your advisor or do not have your academic advisor’s information, please contact the specialty director and/or the DNP academic coordinator at directly.

✓ Complete your compliance requirements.

In order to be compliant with UMSON and UMB's Student Health, the following are required:

  • Background Check
  • Drug Test
  • Immunizations, including the COVID-19 Vaccine
  • CPR Certification
  • HIPAA Certification
  • Code of Conduct
  • RN License (if applicable to the program)

You are responsible for the costs associated with compliance.

Immunizations and certifications will need to be reviewed throughout your time at UMSON, and it is your responsibility to monitor your account and maintain your compliance. We highly encourage you to print the Compliance Self Tracker and post it in a visible place in your home/office to remind you of upcoming compliance dates. You will also receive notifications 21 days prior to a requirement’s expiration date.

✓ Attend orientation activities.

UMSON's orientation activities are designed to help you learn about UMSON policies and procedures, as well as resources available to you. All students must attend.

✓ Get your student ID, books, and uniform.

Student ID

You must be registered for classes before you can obtain your One Card student ID.

Students enrolled at UMSON Baltimore:

Your One Card is your official identification card and is required for entrance into all buildings on the University of Maryland campus. You can also use it to access URecFit and to pay for parking.

Students enrolled at the Universities at Shady Grove:

You are required to obtain IDs from both UMB and Shady Grove.

  • UMB: Please visit the OneCard webpage for more information about obtaining your student ID.
  • USG: You will obtain your USG ID during orientation.


Entry BSN and CNL Students: You will receive information about your books at UMSON 101; most of your books are purchased for you as part of your student fees. You will receive an access code for your online textbooks via email before Orientation. Do not order your books online.

All Other Students: Order your books online.


Students can order uniforms online or in person at the UMB Bookstore. RN-to-BSN students do not need to purchase uniforms. 

The entry BSN uniform includes the following:

  • a short-sleeve white T-shirt for under the scrub top
  • white, black, or gray shoes that can be wiped off (synthetic or leather – no fabric, canvas, or mesh) with closed heel and toes (no Croc type)
  • a stethoscope with bell and diaphragm
  • water resistant analog watch with a sweep second hand
  • well-fitted UMSON scrubs; two pairs recommended (pants/skirt and top)
  • a short white lab scrub jacket (no need to purchase; will be provided to you)
