Igniting Faculty Capacity for Competency-Based Education

This program is designed to increase the workforce readiness of Maryland’s nursing graduates, ultimately increasing statewide nursing capacity, by preparing nursing faculty to incorporate competency-based education (CBE) best practices in their academic programs.

Program highlights

Regional Faculty Development Workshops

Overview:

This faculty development workshop is designed to support Maryland nursing faculty in designing and implementing competency-based education (CBE). Grounded in evidence-based practices and practical strategies, the session will guide participants through the essential components of CBE, with a focus on student success and workforce readiness.

Using the principles of backward design, faculty will explore how to align program outcomes, course objectives, assessments, and teaching strategies to create a clear and cohesive learning experience. By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with actionable strategies to enhance learning and build a curriculum that supports the development of practice-ready graduates.

This program is funded in part by NSPII Grant #25-112 and offered at no cost to Maryland nursing faculty.

Objectives:

By the end of this workshop, participants will:

  1. Describe the benefits of CBE for students, faculty, and practice partners.
  2. Use backward design to align program outcomes, learning objectives, assessments, teaching strategies, and resources.
  3. Design formative and summative assessment strategies that align with learning and program outcomes.
  4. Identify the need to scaffold learning across courses, levels, and settings.
  5. Coach learners with diverse learning characteristics to help them meet program outcomes.
