Courses and Experiences for Students
Deepen your focus and gain real-world experience in global health with courses taught by global health experts from around the world. The Office of Global Health offers courses and experiences – at home and abroad - for both undergraduate and graduate students in all programs. Interprofessional collaboration is essential in global health; because of this we welcome students from all UMB schools to enroll in our interprofessional Global Health Certificate.

Undergraduate-Level Opportunities

BSN Global Health Track and Undergraduate Courses

As part of your BSN education at UMSON, you can deepen your focus with a global health track. BSN students can use their elective to take the Essentials in Global Health Nursing course and apply for a Global Field Experience that can count toward clinical hours.

Essentials in Global Health Nursing Course

Essentials in Global Health Nursing is an online class available to all undergraduate students interested in global health. It gives an overview of important topics and introduces students to the world of global health.

Global Field Experiences

Note: Not all Global Field Experiences will count toward clinical hours. Please visit the Office of Global Health website regularly for updates and contact the office if you are interested in Global Field Experiences that count toward clinical hours.

Upon completing the global health track, you will gain a global lens that will enhance your scope of practice as a registered nurse.

DNP Global Health Track

As part of your DNP education at UMSON, you can deepen your focus with a global health track. DNP students, including post-master's students, can use their electives to take global health courses and continue to the optional interprofessional Certificate in Global Health.

Students can take elective courses in global health and choose to do their DNP practicum with an organization abroad or at home working with global communities. With this track, global health faculty will be your project mentors.

Upon completing the global health track, you will gain a global lens that will enhance your scope of practice as a DNP professional.

Certificate
Post-master's DNP students can enroll in the interprofessional Certificate in Global Health and complete the certificate as part of their DNP coursework.

NRSG 723: Global Burden of Disease (3 credits)

Global Field Experiences

Move from the classroom into the real world with Global Field Experiences for undergraduate and graduate students.

Our Global Field Experiences offer opportunities to be in community with people from diverse cultures at home and abroad, support our UMSON partner organizations, and experience the world of global health.

Global Field Experiences can be taken as an elective toward your coursework or in addition to your program’s required coursework. Experiences are offered intermittently throughout the year.

Graduate students are required to complete a project that supports the work of our partner organizations as part of the Global Field Experience. Some experiences may count toward clinical practicum hours, but this depends on the experience.

Undergraduate students may count some experiences toward clinical hours, but this depends on the experience. It is not guaranteed that Global Field Experiences will be eligible for clinical hours.
