We are pleased to offer a full week of activities and initiatives for all UMSON community members and UMMC nurses, both online/on social media and in person, in celebration of Nurses Week.

Throughout Nurses Week, make your voice heard about the type of social media content you want to see from UMSON by voting for your preferences on our Facebook or Instagramstories.

Show your Nurses Week spirit and your appreciation for Maryland’s nurses by adding our special image to your email signature. Click here for the image, then right click on the image and select "Save image as..." to save it to your computer. Then upload it to your email client’s email signature function.

Flat Louisa 
She’ll be hanging out in the UMSON lobby throughout Nurses Week, so don’t miss the chance to take a selfie with a 2D, nearly life-size version of Louisa Parsons, UMSON’s first superintendent.  

Friday, May 6: Flossie Friday

Tune in to #FlossieFacts 
Designed in 1892 by the School’s first superintendent, Louisa Parsons, who modeled it after one of Florence Nightingale’s own caps, the "Flossie" was the official cap of the School and served for decades as a symbol of the wearer’s professionalism and the School’s connection to the founder of modern nursing. Learn more about the cap’s history and test your knowledge with our #FlossieFacts challenge on our Facebook and Instagram accounts. 

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Event 
1 - 2 p.m. ET, Online 
Join us for a panel discussion led by Philadelphia 6 ABC's consumer investigator, co-anchor, and creator of the documentary series #ThisIsAmerica, Nydia Han, as we amplify Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) voices and recognize the contributions and influence of AAPI Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States. Learn more and register.

We sin-cerealy appreciate you! Stop by for a grab-and-go light breakfast to give you the boost you need for a productive Nurses Week morning.   

Nurses Week Thank You Banner 
All week, UMSON Lobby 
Add a note of gratitude to our Nurses Week banner, which will later hang in a prominent spot in the UMSON building in Baltimore. The banner will be available for signing through the week of May 16. 

Dean's Lecture Series:  
Caring for Those Who Served: Understanding and Addressing Veterans’ Unique Health Care Needs 
4 - 5:30 p.m. ET, Online 
Most veterans do not seek care in Veterans Administration facilities. Therefore, it is imperative that civilian health care professionals understand the unique health care needs related to military service members’ and veterans’ military duties and deployments. This lecture will explore those unique needs and will discuss health care issues related to homeless veterans, with a focus on homeless female veterans, providing recommendations for practice, education, research, and policy.  Learn more and register.

Swing by before work and classes to pick up some fun (and useful!) Nurses Week swag from Jane Kirschling, the Bill and Joanne Conway Dean. 

Clinical Nurse Leader Master’s Option Poster Day
10:30 - 11:30 a.m., UMSON Lobby 
Support the graduating master’s Clinical Nurse Leader option students presenting their culminating posters. The CNL poster is the culmination of the CNL academic experience at UMSON, representing a synthesis of what students have learned across the program of study as they bring a systems analysis lens to real-world practice challenges and prepare to be change agents in the practice world. Learn more. 

Graduation Package Pickup and Stringing Tables 
noon - 3 p.m., UMSON Lobby 
If you’re graduating this month, take this opportunity to pick up your graduation packet, which includes important items like your cords, pins, and name card for stage presentation. (Packets must be picked up prior to the May 19 ceremony). 

Also, our annual stringing tradition is back in person! A table with scrub top decorating materials will be available so you can decorate and submit your scrub top by May 16 for the judging and stringing on May 17 at noon in the UMSON lobby. 

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Poster Day
1 - 4 p.m., Online 
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Poster Day is an opportunity for students to present the findings of their DNP Project to faculty, staff, colleagues, and community partners. Learn more. 

"Thank a Nurse" Challenge 
Take time today to thank the nurses who have made a difference in your life. It's easy: 

  • to thank by email, send a special Nurses Week thank-you card
  • to thank on social media, save a "Thank a Nurse" template from our Instagram story and tag away 
  • thank them in person!  

 

Wednesday, May 11: Pi at-Large Day

Pies for Pi 
noon, UMSON Lobby 
UMSON’s Pi at-Large Chapter of Sigma, which includes members from Luminis Anne Arundel Medical Center, celebrates Nurses Week with a sweet treat: mini moon pies! Stop by the chapter’s table to say hello and pick one up. 

A Visit from Poe 
noon, UMSON Lobby 
Stop by to meet our new UMBPD Comfort K9, Poe! Sometimes called therapy dogs, these K9s are trained to provide relief and affection to people dealing with anxiety, depression, and even stress from exams. This sweet boy loves attention so come and say hello! 

Thursday, May 12: Spirit Day

Show Your UMSON Spirit! 
Whether it's a T-shirt, hat, pin, or anything else, today we encourage you to sport your UMSON or University of Maryland, Baltimore swag. If you don't have anything with the logo on it, wear the color red! Take a pic of you, your friends, and/or your colleagues showing off your spirit, and tag us on Instagram or Twitter @marylandnursing or include our hashtag #UMSON.

Faculty and staff: Join the Faculty and Staff Councils in person for the end-of-year All-School Assembly to hear important updates from your colleagues. Rumor has it there may be a Nurses Week-themed game … 

International Nurse Celebration 
11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m., UMSON Lobby 
Learn about groundbreaking international nurses and pick up some fun swag, courtesy of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
