Application Process

It’s our goal to make applying to the University of Maryland School of Nursing as convenient and straight-forward as possible. Here you’ll find details on the entire application process.

1. Application Materials

Before you begin your online application, read ALL instructions. For each application, you’ll need:

  • $75 (U.S. currency), non-refundable application fee. Applications will not be processed until the application fee is received by the Office of Admissions. We strongly recommend that you pay the application fee online; however, you can send a personal check or money order to the University of Maryland School of Nursing, Office of Admissions, 655 W. Lombard St., Suite 102, Baltimore, MD 21201-1579. Make the check payable to the “University of Maryland.” If the cardholder or check writer is a person other than the applicant, and the fee has not been applied to your application after two business days, you should contact the Office of Admissions to ensure that your payment is applied correctly.
  • Essay portion. You may submit the essay portion with your online application. We recommend that you compose the essay portion using word processing software and copy and paste it into the text box in the online application. If you do not submit the essay portion online, you should email it to or mail it to the Office of Admissions with your other required application documents. 
  • Typed résumé or CV. Résumés and CVs are to be submitted by email to Be sure to include your full name with your résumé submission.
  • Recent letters of recommendation.
    • BSN applicants must submit two letters of recommendation from academic sources.
    • Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) applicants must submit one letter of recommendation from a faculty member.
    • RN-to-BSN applicants must submit two letters of recommendation and at least one must be from an academic source or someone attesting to your nursing knowledge, skills, and abilities (e.g. academic advisor, nursing program instructor, or nurse manager or supervisor).
    • RN-to-MS applicants must submit one letter of recommendation.
    • MS applicants must submit one letter of recommendation from a recent professional source.
    • DNP applicants must submit two letters of recommendation from sources knowledgeable about their work performance and experience.
    • PhD applicants must submit three letters of recommendation from sources knowledgeable about their work performance and experience.
    • See the Apply Now page for program-specific instructions. Letters of recommendation must be submitted on the Recommendation Form for BSN and MS Applicants (PDF) or the Recommendation Form for DNP Applicants (Word) forms. The recommender may additionally submit a letter on official company stationery with a valid signature. Recommendations must include the phone number and email address of the recommender. You may submit recommendations to the University of Maryland School of Nursing by email to or U.S. mail.
  • Application for in-state status classification (if applicable). Applicants who are claiming in-state (Maryland) residency MUST complete the Application for In-State Status Classification. Download, print, and complete the form and submit it by mail.
  • Degree requirement (if applicable). Applicants without a degree from a U.S. high school, college, or university must submit official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test scores taken within two years of application.
  • Foreign coursework evaluation (if applicable). Applicants currently or previously enrolled in foreign (non-U.S.) coursework must have an official course-by-course evaluation by either World Evaluation Services (WES), Education Credential Evaluators (ECE), or Foreign Education Credential Services (AACRAO).

Include your full name and any prior names used on each page of the supporting materials you are submitting. If any of your supporting material was sent prior to submission of your application, contact the Office of Admissions. Supporting material must be sent to:

Before You Begin the Online Application:

  1. Have your credit card ready so that you can pay the $75 application fee.
  2. You will be asked to create a Login ID and Personal Identification Number (PIN). Be sure to write down this information and keep it in a secure place, as it will enable you to return to your application before your final submission and will also allow you to check your application status. Please note that the Login ID is case sensitive.

Applications and supporting material submitted to the School of Nursing become the property of the University of Maryland and will not be returned. Applicants should make and retain copies of all application documents before submission.

The University of Maryland School of Nursing offers all of its programs at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, Md. The traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing option and the RN-to-BSN classroom-based option are also offered at the Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville, Md. All application materials, regardless of desired program location, must be sent to the Baltimore address above.

3. Application Status

To check the status of your application, go here. Use the Login ID and PIN you created when you submitted your online application. Your Login ID is case sensitive.
