Doctoral Programs
PhD: Doctor of Philosophy

Our PhD program was initiated in 1979 as the 16th doctoral nursing program in the nation. Every student is carefully chosen and matched to the faculty member who can offer the greatest opportunity to succeed in developing their research program. As a graduate, you will join a thriving group of alumni — many of whom hold key leadership positions in academia, research, and administration across the country.
DNP: Doctor of Nursing Practice

The DNP is the highest practice degree in nursing. It enables you to remain in direct patient care while providing you with the knowledge and training to be a leader in a fast-changing health care environment. UMSON's DNP is top-ranked by U.S. News and World Report, providing an immersive education in evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and systems leadership.
UMSON's Organized Research Centers
UMSON is home to three organized research centers and the National Institute for Nursing Research-funded P30 Omics Associated with Self-management Interventions for Symptoms (OASIS) Center.
Our centers' extramurally funded investigators study a variety of critical health problems including chronic pain, impulsivity and drug abuse, neuromuscular disorders, sleep, web-based interventions, health care organizational issues, and bone health.
Building Healthy Behaviors Across the Life Span (BBAL) Organized Research Center

BBAL investigates the management of disease, the optimization of health, and the ways in which biological findings can influence disease prevalence and progression.

The UMB ICTR is a campus-wide clinical translational research initiative that provides financial support as well as infrastructure, environment, training, and workforce to invigorate, facilitate, and accelerate clinical translational research to improve patient and community health.
Through the UMNursing Funded Research program, there are opportunities for collaborative research among faculty from UMSON and the UMMC practice partners to promote care coordination and patient-centered care across Maryland hospitals while continuing to expand the care coordination focus area/courses in academia.
