Orientation Information

UMSON offers a two-day orientation for entry-into-practice students (traditional BSN and CNL) that includes an academic overview, student academic success program, and campus orientation. The academic success programs and campus orientations are held at the location where the student was admitted—either Baltimore or Shady Grove. Students may contact the Office of Admissions at 410-706-0501 (option #2) if they are uncertain of their admittance location.

Student Success Immersion Program

The academic success program for Baltimore students, Student Success Immersion Program (SSIP), is offered by UMSON’s Student Success Center. This program provides students with the tools and refresher skills to be successful in their first semester and beyond. Students will have an opportunity to interact with other students in their cohort in a small group setting, review concepts of anatomy and physiology, and discuss skills related to medical dosage calculations. Students receive an introduction to their first semester laboratory courses and an overview of expectations. 

Dates for the SSIP are Wednesday, June 25; Tuesday, July 8; Tuesday, July 15; and Tuesday, July 22. The SSIP for the Promise Program is Thursday, July 24. Click here to register for the SSIP.

All students enrolling at the Baltimore location must attend the campus orientation at 8 a.m. Thursday, January 22. During this orientation, students will receive information about UMSON policies and procedures, as well as additional information about resources available at the School and at UMB. 

One Card Student ID

All new students are required to send in an appropriate photo to obtain their One Card Student ID. Click here for further instructions. 

Required Forms and Documentation

UMSON uses the Maryland Hospital Association’s designated vendor, Certified Background, to manage student immunizations, compliance documents, background checks, and drug screenings. Click here for general information about Certified Background.

Compliance Document Collection

All admitted full-time and part-time students who wish to qualify for enrollment at the University of Maryland, Baltimore must satisfy the University's immunization requirements. Additional program-specific compliance documents are required to complete your admission and in accordance with the policies of the School of Nursing and State of Maryland.

The Student Immunization Tracker facilitates the storage and management of students’ records. Once you have created your Certified Profile, you will be prompted to submit your records via digital upload, mail, or fax.

The Document Manager allows the secure upload and storage of the following documents required for admission and compliance:

  • CPR Certification
  • Flu Vaccine (fall semester only)
  • US RN License (RNs only)

Background Check and Drug Screen

UMSON does not require you to undergo a background check and drug screen. However, the hospitals associated with our clinical education program require criminal background and urine drug screen checks on incoming students to ensure the safety of the patients treated by students in the program. A review typically takes 1-3 business days to complete.

The reviews are conducted by Certified Background. UMSON administrators, faculty, and staff do not receive any information of the student’s criminal background report. If you have any concerns regarding your background check, please contact Certified Background directly and NOT the School.

Orientation Information

Campus Orientation

All nursing students enrolling at USG must attend the campus orientation from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday, January 15.  During this orientation, students will receive information about School of Nursing policies and procedures and resources available at USG. They will also be welcomed and hear remarks from senior nursing leadership.

Academic Success Program

The Academic Success Program for Shady Grove students will be offered at USG from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, January 16. This program is offered by the School of Nursing and the Center for Academic Success, provides students with the tools and refresher skills to be successful in their first semester and beyond. Students will have an opportunity to interact with other students in their cohort, review concepts, and discuss skills related to medical dosage calculations. Students receive an introduction to their first semester laboratory courses and an overview of expectations for academic success. In addition, new students will be able to purchase their uniforms, lab coats, stethoscopes, and all other needed medical equipment at the New Nursing Student Welcome Fair, as well as interact with upperclassmen throughout the day.

All Shady Grove students are expected to attend both days of orientation. If you are unable to attend one or both days due to extenuating circumstances, please call Kathie Dever at 301-738-6097 to reserve a seat at orientation on the Baltimore campus.

Orientation Information

All students enrolling must attend the campus orientation 9 a.m, Wednesday, January 21. During this orientation, students will receive information about UMSON policies and procedures, as well as additional information about resources available at the School and at UMB. 

One Card Student ID

All new students are required to send in an appropriate photo to obtain their One Card Student ID. Click here for further instructions.

Required Forms and Documentation

UMSON uses the Maryland Hospital Association’s designated vendor, Certified Background, to manage student immunizations, compliance documents, background checks, and drug screenings. Click here for general information about Certified Background.

Compliance Document Collection

All admitted full-time and part-time students who wish to qualify for enrollment at the University of Maryland, Baltimore must satisfy the University's immunization requirements. Additional program-specific compliance documents are required to complete your admission and in accordance with the policies of the School of Nursing and State of Maryland.

The Student Immunization Tracker facilitates the storage and management of students’ records. Once you have created your Certified Profile, you will be prompted to submit your records via digital upload, mail, or fax.

The Document Manager allows the secure upload and storage of the following documents required for admission and compliance:

  • CPR Certification
  • Flu Vaccine (fall semester only)
  • US RN License (RNs only)

Background Check and Drug Screen

UMSON does not require you to undergo a background check and drug screen. However, the hospitals associated with our clinical education program require criminal background and urine drug screen checks on incoming students to ensure the safety of the patients treated by students in the program. A review typically takes 1-3 business days to complete.

The reviews are conducted by Certified Background. UMSON administrators, faculty, and staff do not receive any information of the student’s criminal background report. If you have any concerns regarding your background check, please contact Certified Background directly and NOT the School.

Fall 2014 applicants that submitted applications by the February 3 priority deadline will be provided an admissions decision mid-April.

The Admissions Committee will review DNP applications received after the February 3, 2014 priority deadline on a space available basis. Applications received after the priority deadline will receive an admission decision by mid-May.

Orientation Information

All students enrolling in the DNP program must attend orientation at 8 a.m. Monday, June 2, 2014. During this orientation, students will receive information about UMSON policies and procedures, as well as additional information about resources available at the School and at UMB.
