Orientation Information

UMSON offers a two-day orientation for entry-into-practice students (traditional BSN and CNL) that includes an academic overview, student academic success program, and campus orientation. The academic success programs and campus orientations are held at the location where the student was admitted—either Baltimore or Shady Grove. Students may contact the Office of Admissions at 410-706-0501 (option #2) if they are uncertain of their admittance location.

Student Success Immersion Program

The academic success program for Baltimore students, Student Success Immersion Program (SSIP), is offered by UMSON’s Student Success Center. This program provides students with the tools and refresher skills to be successful in their first semester and beyond. Students will have an opportunity to interact with other students in their cohort in a small group setting, review concepts of anatomy and physiology, and discuss skills related to medical dosage calculations. Students receive an introduction to their first semester laboratory courses and an overview of expectations. 

The SSIP dates for summer 2015 are below. Morning or afternoon sessions are designated by AM or PM. AM sessions are 7:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. and PM sessions are 12:30-5 p.m.

  • PM Tuesday, June 2 – BSN Session 1 (Session is full)
  • AM Tuesday, June 9 – BSN Session 2 (Session is full)
  • PM Thursday, June 11 – BSN Session 3 (Session is full)
  • PM Monday, June 22 – BSN Session 4 (Session is full)
  • AM Wednesday, July 8 – BSN Session 5 (Session is full)
  • AM Monday, July 13 – BSN Session 6 (PROMISE students only)
  • AM Wednesday, July 15 – BSN Session 7
  • AM Friday, July 24 – BSN Session 8

All students enrolling at the Baltimore location must attend the campus orientation at 8 a.m. Wednesday, September 2. During this orientation, students will receive information about UMSON policies and procedures, as well as additional information about resources available at the School and at UMB. All new students are required to send in an appropriate photo to obtain their One Card Student ID. Click here for further instructions. 

Required Forms and Documentation

All admitted full-time or part-time students who wish to qualify for enrollment at the University of Maryland, Baltimore must satisfy the University’s immunization requirements. In addition, our clinical partners associated with our clinical education programs require criminal background checks and drug testing on incoming students to ensure the safety of the patients treated by students in the program.

Fall 2015 deadline: August 20, 2015

UMSON uses the Maryland Hospital Association’s designated vendor, Certified Background, to manage and review student immunizations, compliance documents, background checks, and drug testing.

Immunizations

All immunizations requirements are expected to be completed by orientation. Certified Background’s Medical Document Manager allows the secure upload and storage of the following documents required for admission and compliance:

  1. MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
  2. Varicella (Chickenpox): history of disease is NOT accepted
  3. Hepatitis B
  4. Tetanus
  5. TB Skin Test
  6. Influenza: current season’s flu vaccine or waiver if medically prohibited
  7. Polio: required for a specific clinical partner; you can either select no OR upload your polio immunization information

Other Compliance Documents

  1. CPR Certification: American Heart Association Healthcare Provider or American Red Cross Professional Rescuer & Healthcare Provider ONLY
  2. HIPAA Certification
  3. Code of Conduct

Background Checks and Drug Screens

  • UMSON does not require students to undergo a background check and drug screen; however, the hospitals associated with our clinical education programs require criminal background checks and drug screens.
  • The reviews are conducted by Certified Background and typically take 1-3 business days to complete.
  • UMSON administrators, faculty, and staff do not receive the specifics of the student’s criminal background report.
  • If you have any concerns regarding your background check, please contact Certified Background directly.
  • Drug tests must be completed through a LabCorp facility.

Ordering Your Package from Certified Background

  • All students must order the package specified for your program.
  • Students are responsible for costs associated with compliance.
  • Students enrolled in the traditional BSN program must order must order the I am a New Student in my UMB Program package, which includes a background check, drug test, and Medical Document Manager.

Orientation Information

Campus Orientation

All nursing students enrolling at USG must attend the campus orientation from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday, August 20.  During this orientation, students will receive information about School of Nursing policies and procedures and resources available at USG. They will also be welcomed and hear remarks from senior nursing leadership. To register, contact Kathie Dever at 301-738-6097 or Cassia Gordon at 301-738-6047.

Academic Success Program

The Academic Success Program for Shady Grove students will be offered at USG from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, August 21. This program is offered by the School of Nursing and the Center for Academic Success, provides students with the tools and refresher skills to be successful in their first semester and beyond. Students will have an opportunity to interact with other students in their cohort, review concepts, and discuss skills related to medical dosage calculations. Students receive an introduction to their first semester laboratory courses and an overview of expectations for academic success. In addition, new students will be able to purchase their uniforms, lab coats, stethoscopes, and all other needed medical equipment at the New Nursing Student Welcome Fair, as well as interact with upperclassmen throughout the day.

All Shady Grove students are expected to attend both days of orientation. If you are unable to attend one or both days due to extenuating circumstances, please call Kathie Dever at 301-738-6097 to reserve a seat at orientation on the Baltimore campus.

Orientation Information

UMSON offers a two-day orientation for entry-into-practice students (traditional BSN and CNL) that includes an academic overview, student academic success program, and campus orientation. The academic success programs and campus orientations are held at the location where the student was admitted—either Baltimore or Shady Grove. Students may contact the Office of Admissions at 410-706-0501 (option #2) if they are uncertain of their admittance location.

Student Success Immersion Program

The academic success program for Baltimore students, Student Success Immersion Program (SSIP), is offered by UMSON’s Student Success Center. This program provides students with the tools and refresher skills to be successful in their first semester and beyond. Students will have an opportunity to interact with other students in their cohort in a small group setting, review concepts of anatomy and physiology, and discuss skills related to medical dosage calculations. Students receive an introduction to their first semester laboratory courses and an overview of expectations. 

The SSIP dates for summer 2015 are below. Morning or afternoon sessions are designated by AM or PM. AM sessions are expected to run 8 a.m.-noon and PM sessions 1-5 p.m.

  • PM Wednesday, June 17 – CNL Session 1 (Session is full)
  • AM Friday, June 19 – CNL Session 2
  • PM Monday, July 20 – CNL Session 3
  • AM Thursday, July 23 – CNL Session 4

All admitted full-time or part-time students who wish to qualify for enrollment at the University of Maryland, Baltimore must satisfy the University’s immunization requirements. In addition, our clinical partners associated with our clinical education programs require criminal background checks and drug testing on incoming students to ensure the safety of the patients treated by students in the program.

Fall 2015 deadline: August 20, 2015

UMSON uses the Maryland Hospital Association’s designated vendor, Certified Background, to manage and review student immunizations, compliance documents, background checks, and drug testing.

Immunizations

All immunizations requirements are expected to be completed by orientation. Certified Background’s Medical Document Manager allows the secure upload and storage of the following documents required for admission and compliance:

  1. MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
  2. Varicella (Chickenpox): history of disease is NOT accepted
  3. Hepatitis B
  4. Tetanus
  5. TB Skin Test
  6. Influenza: current season’s flu vaccine or waiver if medically prohibited
  7. Polio: required for a specific clinical partner; you can either select no OR upload your polio immunization information

Other Compliance Documents

  1. CPR Certification: American Heart Association Healthcare Provider or American Red Cross Professional Rescuer & Healthcare Provider ONLY
  2. HIPAA Certification
  3. Code of Conduct

Background Checks and Drug Screens

  • UMSON does not require students to undergo a background check and drug screen; however, the hospitals associated with our clinical education programs require criminal background checks and drug screens.
  • The reviews are conducted by Certified Background and typically take 1-3 business days to complete.
  • UMSON administrators, faculty, and staff do not receive the specifics of the student’s criminal background report.
  • If you have any concerns regarding your background check, please contact Certified Background directly.
  • Drug tests must be completed through a LabCorp facility.
