Sept. 15, 2020: SAFE on Campus Screening and COVID-19 Testing Requirements for Students

Dear Students,

We want to ensure that you have the most accurate and clear information regarding your SAFE on Campus screening and COVID-19 testing requirements.

All students must:

If you physically access the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) or Universities at Shady Grove (USG) locations, you must also:

  • Upload proof of a negative COVID-19 test result or a medical clearance from Student Health to Castle Branch; the test must have been completed between Sept. 7 and 26 and must be uploaded by Sept. 27. We anticipate that the upload function will be available on Sept. 16, and we will email students with a notification when you are able to upload your test results.

If you only physically access a location that is not UMB or USG in your role as a student (e.g., a clinical or practicum site), you must also:

  • Comply with any COVID-19 testing guidelines of that site.

Religious Observances

You may request a religious observance exception for SAFE on Campus screening during religious holidays or for Sabbaths that go beyond one day. For Sabbaths following the solar cycle, if permissible for your religious tradition, you may submit your SAFE form after sundown and continue to remain compliant with SAFE on Campus expectations. For example, if Sabbath begins on Friday after sundown and concludes Saturday after sundown, you can submit a SAFE form on Friday morning and again on Saturday after sundown and remain compliant with the SAFE on Campus policy.

Understanding that there may be situations where it is impossible to submit a SAFE form due to religious observance, if you choose to request an exception, you may do so via the form on this webpage. Your request must include a letter from your religious leader stating that you are not allowed to comply with infection control requirements in the time of a pandemic. The letter must state this specifically. Please do the best you can to obtain this letter in advance of the holiday; however, if that is not possible, please be sure to upload the letter as soon as possible to remain compliant with the SAFE on Campus policy. The attach function to include the letter is at the bottom right of the form, and please enter SAFE in the Course Info field. After your holiday has concluded, you should resume your daily SAFE submissions.

If you have any questions about these requirements, please contact the UMSON Office of the Registrar and Clinical Placements.

Please stay safe,

Jane Kirschling, PhD, RN, FAAN
