Moving Forward During the Pandemic

Here at UMSON, we continue to carry on with resourcefulness and dedication (as nurses always have), standing ready to move forward in a redesigned world. As we navigate the rapidly fluctuating situation related to COVID-19, your health and safety are our top priorities.

  • Vaccinations are mandated. The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) and UMSON, in accordance with the University System of Maryland mandate, have vaccination rates in the mid- to high 90% range. As President Bruce Jarrell, MD, FACS, has stated, “The University has been incredible in taking individual and collective actions to fight this horrible virus. We have not had significant spread attributed to activities occurring at UMB.” Because of this and the other safety precautions UMB and UMSON have put into place, in-person learning can take place safely, even without physical distancing.

  • Personal protective equipment is provided. We will provide you with the necessary personal protective equipment, as appropriate, and make sure that it fits you — a process known as "fit testing."

  • We are keeping an eye on the ongoing pandemic. UMB and UMSON constantly monitor and consistently and honestly assess the public health situation, knowing that it changes nearly by the minute. We remain flexible to make changes as needed.

  • Clinical experiences are conducted using necessary precautions. You will have the clinical experiences you need and expect to graduate with the skills and ability to enter, advance, and lead in the nursing workforce upon graduation. Some of our clinical partners have different or additional requirements regarding COVID-19.

Now more than ever, your contributions are critical to the effectiveness of our nation’s health care. We want you to know how proud we are that you have chosen to be a Maryland Nurse.
