March 30, 2020: Important Information on Job Opportunities at UMMC/UMMS

Dear UMSON Students,

The University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON) and the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) have had a long-standing partnership called UMNursing. This partnership has allowed us to leverage the resources of both organizations to assure that we are preparing well-educated nurses to meet the complex health care needs of Maryland.

We want to take this opportunity to thank you for understanding the need for UMSON to change how we are delivering your courses, clinicals/practicums, labs, and simulation learning activities due to COVID-19. We are living, studying, and working in uncertain times as we experience the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on every aspect of our lives. We want to reassure you that our priority is to support you in completing your degree requirements on time and, for those who are graduating this May, to welcome you into the health professions workforce, whether as a professional nurse or as a nurse with advanced education in a specialty area.

The University of Maryland Medical Center and member hospitals in the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) are currently laser-focused on the COVID-19 pandemic and are also actively interviewing and hiring our May graduates. UMMC always strives to hire as many UMSON graduates as possible and the current state is no exception to this practice. The need for well-educated nurses continues during these unprecedented times.

In prioritizing the health and safety of their candidates and employees, UMMS has implemented a new virtual interview process. To learn more about the hiring process at UMMC and other UMMS hospitals, visit our events website and sign up to chat with a nurse recruiter. UMMS hosts a weekly RN and Student Nurse chat with nurse recruiters and has an upcoming Registered Nurse Virtual Open House for both upcoming new graduates and experienced nurses on Thursday, April 2, from 1 - 5 p.m.

UMSON’s Student Success Center staff are ready to assist you in preparing your application materials and doing “mock interviews” using virtual technology. Please reach out to them at to schedule your appointment.

We wish you the very best in the weeks ahead.
