March 20, 2020: Clinical Communication from Lori M. Harris, Director of Student Placements and Registration

Dear Clinical and Practicum Site Colleagues:

Given the extraordinary health crisis that we are facing, the University of Maryland, Baltimore has made the decision to suspend all in-person educational activities to include clinicals, practica, field placements, internships, and other in-person experiences for the Spring 2020 semester, effective no later than Saturday, March 21, 2020. This means that all in-person experiential learning activities with patients and clients must be halted and converted to virtual or other options that do not involve in-person activities.

University of Maryland School of Nursing faculty are working with students to execute plans to ensure the continuity of educational delivery. Alternatives to in-person clinical and practicum experiences including distance simulation; special online resources; and online activities such as telemedicine, telehealth, telebehavioral health, and similar means of care delivery are encouraged. Our faculty will be working very closely with practice partners to determine what may be possible.

We may make exceptions to this policy for extraordinary circumstances, such as situations in which students have unmet graduation requirements that are necessary for them to graduate on time, and these requirements cannot be met through distance methods. Should these situations arise, we will be in contact with you directly to make arrangements.

We truly appreciate our partners in nursing education and know that together we can make a positive difference in the health outcomes of the people we serve.

Sincerely,

Lori M. Harris
