March 19, 2020: Important Update on COVID-19 and UMSON Classes, Labs, Simulation, and Clinical Experiences from Jane M. Kirschling, Dean

Dear UMSON Students,

I have just posted a video to share an important message with you and am also writing to alert you to the latest information from UMB Interim President Dr. Bruce Jarrell (New UMB Clinical Placement Guidelines PDF) regarding changes to any in-person learning activities in light of the COVID-19 public health emergency.

Effective Saturday, March 21 (at the latest), in-person learning activities are suspended until further notice. Please stay in close contact with your course coordinators as we move classes, labs, simulation, and clinical experiences to virtual and other non-in-person modalities.

I want to reassure you that we are committed to ensuring that you maintain your academic progress and that you stay on track for the continuation of your education and graduation, particularly for those of you scheduled to graduate this May. Please reach out to your course coordinators, your academic dean (the dean for your specific degree program), the UMSON Office of Student and Academic Services, or to me directly if you have any questions or concerns. In addition, if you have any special circumstances, please share these with your program’s associate dean or your course coordinator.

Please continue to monitor the UMB ( and UMSON ( websites and check your emails at least daily.

If I can be of help, please reach out to me at

Please know that we are all here to support you on your journey to becoming a nurse or advancing your education through graduate study. Please also take care of yourselves and those around you during this difficult time.
