Sigma Theta Tau - Pi Chapter

Overview
The Pi Chapter (015) was established in 1959 at the University of Maryland School of Nursing. Mrs Ethel Palmer Clarke, Class of 1906, School of Nursing, University of Maryland, is credited with being "Mother" of Sigma Theta Tau. This Web site was first established April 1995 — the first Sigma Theta Tau site in the United States.
About Us
Sigma Theta Tau, the National Honorary Society of Nursing, installed Pi Chapter on June 2, 1959, in Whitehurst Hall at the University of Maryland School of Nursing, Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Lois Austin, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; installed Pi Chapter and presented the Charter to P. Dale Every. Dr Austin was assisted by Dr. Edna Treasure of Washington, D.C.
The first officers were:

- TREASURER - Kathryn S. Wohlsen
- ARCHIVIST - Ellen Foster

The new Pi Chapter, of Sigma Theta Tau, Inc., was the first to be established in Maryland. Ninety Charter members were initiated during the Installation Ceremonies.
Membership Information
Guidelines for Membership Eligibility
Sigma Theta Tau International's philosophy of membership eligibility is based upon the purposes of the Society. Membership is rewarded for achievement of the membership criteria of Sigma Theta Tau International. Awarding membership encourages, fosters, and actively supports further professional development, thus promoting nursing scholarship, leadership, creativity and commitment to nursing, fulfilling the purposes of the Honor Society. Members are inducted to encourage and recognize superior scholarship and/or leadership achievement in nursing. Membership is conferred solely on the basis of specified eligibility.
Undergraduate Students must:
- have completed ½ of the nursing curriculum;
- have at least a GPA of 3.0 (based on a 4.0 grading scale);
- rank in the upper 35 percentile of the graduating class; and
- meet the expectation of academic integrity.
Registered Nurse Students must:
- have completed 12 credit hours at current school;
- have completed ½ of the nursing curriculum;
- have at least a GPA of 3.0 (based on a 4.0 grading scale);
- rank in the upper 35 percentile of graduating class; and
- meet the expectation of academic integrity.
Graduate Students (Master's and Doctorate) must
- have completed ¼ of the nursing curriculum;
- have at least a GPA of 3.5 (based on a 4.0 grading scale); and
- meet the expectation of academic integrity.
Nurse Leader Candidates must:
- be legally recognized to practice nursing in his/her country;
- have a minimum of a baccalaureate degree or the equivalent in any field; and
- demonstrate achievement in nursing.
Purposes of Sigma Theta Tau International
- Recognize superior achievement and scholarship.
- Recognize the development of leadership qualities.
- Foster high professional standards.
- Encourage creative work.
- Strengthens commitment to the ideals and purposes of the profession.

Scholarships
Each Spring, Pi Chapter invites applications of members for scholarships in the amount of $1000.00. Scholarship application packets are due April 11, 2008.
Graduate Students
Eligibility Criteria:
- GPA of 3.75 or above.
- Evidence to support behaviors consistent with scholarship, leadership, high professional standards, creativity, and commitment to the profession of nursing.
- Member of the Pi Chapter.
Instructions for Graduate Students:
- Print two copies of the Pi Chapter Faculty Evaluation Form for Scholarship. Give them to two faculty members (Sigma Theta Tau members preferred) for completion and have the faculty members return them to you.
- Print and complete one copy of the Pi Chapter Graduate Scholarship Application Form.
- Submit one copy of your transcript. A downloaded unofficial copy of your transcript is acceptable.
- Write a personal statement no longer than 3 pages in length (double-spaced) describing how the scholarship will advance your studies and nursing career.
- Return the entire packet to the Pi Chapter Office, 655 West Lombard St, Baltimore, MD 21201 by April 14, 2006. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.

Undergraduate Students

- GPA of 3.50 or above.
- Evidence to support behaviors consistent with scholarship, leadership, high professional standards, creativity, and commitment to the profession of nursing. 3. Member or inductee in Pi Chapter, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor
Society of Nursing.
