Welcome to the April issue of School of Nursing News, an electronic newsletter designed to inform, engage, inspire, and connect with faculty members, staff, students, alumni, and other constituents of the University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON). 

Campus Interprofessional Day Held April 10

UMSON students and faculty members participated in the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s (UMB) inaugural Interprofessional Education (IPE) Day, held April 10 on the UMB campus. The event brought together students from all UMB professional schools – dentistry, law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and social work – to share and use the knowledge of their own discipline, gain experience working with individuals from other professions in pursuit of a climate of mutual respect and shared values, and gain experience communicating with other professionals in a responsive and responsible manner.

Kirschling and Grant Honored by Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association

Dean Jane M. Kirschling, PhD, RN, FAAN, and Assistant Professor Marian Grant, DNP, RN, CRNP, ACHPN, have received honors from the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA). HPNA, a national non-profit professional nursing organization dedicated to promoting excellence in palliative nursing care, announced that Kirschling is the recipient of its 2013 Leading the Way Award, and Grant is a 2013 Fellow in Palliative Care Nursing.

The Leading the Way Award is regarded as one of HPNA’s highest honors. It recognizes those who have been consistent leaders in palliative care nursing, while demonstrating a deep and abiding commitment to furthering the philosophy, mission, and quality of palliative care. 

Faculty & Staff Appointments

CORRECTION: In the March newsletter, it was reported that Mohammed Nour, an instructional technology specialist in the Office of Academic Affairs, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. He also holds a Master of Science degree in Instructional Technology from Towson University.

Meika Boyce, MSN, BSN ’02, CRNA, has joined the Department of Organizational Systems and Adult Health as a part-time clinical instructor in the Nurse Anesthesia master’s specialty. She is on staff at St. Agnes Hospital, where she is a practicing Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. Boyce holds a Master of Science degree from Drexel University, a Bachelor of Science degree from UMSON, and an Associate’s of Science degree from Baltimore City Community College.

Brooks DuBose, BA, has joined the Department of Organizational Systems and Adult Health as a research project coordinator, working for Dr. Susan Dorsey. He comes to UMSON from the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) Department of Psychology, where he served as a faculty research assistant. DuBose holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from UMCP. 

Sally Snader, BSN ’81, RN, has joined the Department of Organizational Systems and Adult Health as a clinical research nurse, working for Dr. Susan Dorsey. She comes to UMSON from Kennedy Krieger Institute, where she worked as a Clinical Nurse II. Snader holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from UMSON. 

Joseph Thomas, BA, has joined the Office of Student and Academic Affairs as a transcript evaluator. He previously served as an employment specialist at Abilities Network. Thomas holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Hampton University and will finish his Master of Science in Applied Information Technology at Towson University in December 2013.

Megan Wolff, MS, has joined the Office of Academic Affairs as an instructional technology specialist. She previously worked in the UMB Health Sciences and Human Services Library as a library associate and a library technician. Wolff holds a Master of Science degree from Towson University (TU), a post-baccalaureate certificate in Interactive Media Design from TU, and a Bachelor of Arts in English from Washington College (Md.).

Catherine Haut, DNP, CPNP, CCRN, assistant professor, Department of Family and Community Health, was recently nominated to represent the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners for a one-year term on the National Pediatric Scope and Standards of Practice Task Force, which convened in March 2013. The purpose of this group is to evaluate and edit the current National Pediatric Scope and Standards of Practice for nurses and advanced practice nursing.

As part of her Robert Wood Johnson (RWJ) Executive Nurse Fellows program, Patricia Morton, PhD, RN, ACNP-BC, FAAN, professor and associate dean for academic affairs, is participating in an action learning project with five other RWJ fellows. The aim of the project is to develop new models of clinical education for nurse practitioner education.

Norbert Myslinski, PhD, adjunct associate professor, Department of Organizational Systems and Adult Health, conducted the 6th National Brain Bee Championship at the University of Maryland, Baltimore in March. The Brain Bee is a neuroscience competition for high school students. Winners from 45 regional competitions in 26 states came to test their knowledge of the human brain including such topics as intelligence, emotions, memory, sleep, vision, hearing, sensations, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia, addictions, and brain research.

Charlotte Seckman, PhD, RN-BC, assistant professor, Department of Organizational Systems and Adult Health, was selected for the School of Nursing’s 2013 Education Intensive Faculty (EIF) program. Seckman will focus on assessment, planning, development, and integration of nursing and health care informatics concepts into the entry-level nursing curriculum. The EIF program is designed to support and develop faculty members who engage in the scholarship of teaching. The program provides two years of protected time, financial support, mentoring, and other resources.

Deborah Schofield, DNP, CRNP, assistant professor, Department of Organizational Systems and Adult Health, has been named a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Professional Nursing and the Journal of Online Advance Practice Nursing.

Nursing Informatics master’s student Margie Burnett co-authored the following paper:

Students from the Universities at Shady Grove, including nursing, medical, and pharmacy students, spent part of their spring break working in interdisciplinary teams assessing and planning care for hospitalized rehab patients through the Geriatric Assessment Interdisciplinary Team (GAIT) program in Cumberland, Md.

Alumni News & Notes

Regina Cusson, PhD, MS ’79, has been named dean of the University of Connecticut School of Nursing. She has served as interim dean since 2011 and as a professor in the School of Nursing since 1998. From 2007 to 2010, she also served as associate dean for academic affairs and advanced practice. Cusson is a certified neonatal nurse practitioner, and she coordinated the School of Nursing’s Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Program. Her current research focuses on advanced nursing practice role transition and neonatal nurse practitioner workforce issues in the U.S. and Britain.

Mary Agnes Donnelly Ostick, BSN ’82, has worked as a nurse practitioner since 1984. She currently works in the Student Health Center at Villanova University. Mary Agnes and her husband John have four children and two granddaughters. They still miss Baltimore, especially crab cakes! Go Orioles!

Beth A. Shughart McKee, BSN ’83, recently retired as a research nurse from the Pennsylvania State University.

Laura Walter Triola, MS, MSN, BSN ’83, is a family nurse practitioner at Mendez Family Care in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. She earned a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1988 and a MSN from the University of North Florida.

Alumni Association Volunteer Opportunities

The UMSON Alumni Association’s Recent Graduate Committee is recruiting alumni volunteers for the following community service programs during spring/summer 2013:

Paul’s Place: a non-profit organization located in Southwest Baltimore that provides men, women, and children with a number of services, including hot meals, educational training, after school programs, clothing, and access to a nurse’s clinic. Through a partnership between UMSON and Paul’s Place, UMSON students staff the clinic during the school year as part of their clinical experience. However, volunteers are needed to staff the clinic when UMSON classes are not in session (Dec-Jan and May-Aug).

You are invited to volunteer with fellow UMSON alumni in staffing the nurse’s clinic at Paul’s Place on the following Wednesdays: May 22, June 19, and July 17, 2013.

My Sister’s Place: a non-profit organization located in Baltimore that provides women with shelter, education, training for employment, and meals.

You are invited to volunteer with fellow UMSON alumni in preparing and serving breakfast on the following Wednesday mornings: June 12 and July 10.
