The University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON) is part of the University of Maryland (UM) graduate professional campus that also includes the schools of dentistry, law, medicine, pharmacy, and social work, and is in close proximity to the University of Maryland Medical Center, University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute, University of Maryland BioPark, and the Baltimore VA Medical Center. A national leader in health sciences research, public service, and patient care, UM was awarded a record $567 million in extramural funding in fiscal year 2010. UMSON also maintains facilities and conducts classes at the Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville, Md. UMSON is dedicated to creating a research-intensive environment that will advance the science of nursing through research and scholarship of the highest quality. UMSON ranks 11th in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, and faculty members conduct their research under the auspices of two campus-appointed Organized Research Centers (ORCs): Biology and Behavior Across the Lifespan and the Center for Health Outcomes.
For more than 30 years, UMSON has prepared scholars and researchers who advance nursing science. Students are admitted to the PhD program through one of three options: post-baccalaureate, post-master’s, or PhD/MBA. Students take both required and elective courses and participate in research rotations and mentored research experiences.
UMSON is seeking a dynamic, visionary leader who can work with faculty, staff, and students to take the PhD program to the next level. Our goals for the next five years include the recruitment of highly competitive students from a national and international pool of candidates, an evaluation of our curriculum, and an increasing in the number of students who compete successfully for extramural funding. This position will be 50 percent administrative, while the other 50 percent will be devoted to one’s own research, and other teaching and service duties.
