About the Partnership

Komen Maryland Executive Director Robin Prothro speaks at the partnership kick-off eventRecognizing a gap in the funding of nurse education to advance knowledge of breast cancer, the Maryland Affiliate made a three-year commitment to the University of Maryland School of Nursing to develop a comprehensive and sustainable evidence-based program.  With Komen Maryland support, the University of Maryland, School of Nursing will train and educate a cadre of nurses who are better prepared to screen, treat and manage breast cancer patients. The Komen Maryland Affiliate Nursing Partnership is the first of its kind in the nation linking the Komen Foundation with a School of Nursing.

This funding initiative is intended to model a unique and innovative way for The Komen Foundation to emphasize critically important roles that nurses play in the fight against breast cancer and for the School of Nursing to educate and prepare students, faculty, and practicing nurses who work in the field of breast cancer.

Komen Breast Cancer Survivor Chair

The University of Maryland School of Nursing was chosen as one of only three organizations to receive a Komen Breast Cancer Survivor Chair from the 2006 Race for the Cure.  The Ethan Allen chair provides an excellent and unique opportunity to highlight the School of Nursing’s Komen Partnership activities to our students and to the University community. The chair is a symbol of strength and hope, the embodiment of each breast cancer survivor who signed it. The chair will allow students, faculty, and staff to reflect on those who have lost their lives to this disease and to those who are survivors. It will also serve as a reminder of the unique breast cancer educational opportunities open to our students as a result of our partnership with Komen.
