Governor’s Wellmobile Program

The SON's Governor’s Wellmobile Program operates four mobile health units staffed with family nurse practitioner faculty, registered nurses, bilingual outreach workers and professional drivers. Each mobile health unit is equipped with two exam rooms, an intake/education area and a CLIA Waiver-approved laboratory. The mobile clinic’s unique capacity to travel to various sites each day expands the availability of services to a wider segment of Maryland’s population.

The Governor’s Wellmobile plays a significant role across the State as a safety net provider of health care services for the uninsured and underinsured. Without the Wellmobile, many of the citizens served would have little or no access to health care services and would rely on hospital emergency rooms as their only source of care. The School of Nursing Governors’ Wellmobile Program is on the forefront of dealing with health disparities and health literacy challenges

In FY 2004, the Wellmobile provided services to 6000 underserved clients. The focus of the Wellmobile Program is concentrated on case management and a holistic view of healthcare services. Clients who need help with housing, food, medications and specialty health care are assisted in finding local, state and federal resources.

An integral component of the scope of services offered by the Wellmobile Program is health education and outreach services in the local communities that embrace the program. The Wellmobile strives to become an integrated part of the local health care delivery system fabric. The practitioners seek opportunities to coordinate the unique resources available through the Wellmobile with the prevention and promotion programs in the target communities

The Wellmobiles serve as clinical learning sites for students in the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs offered at the School of Nursing. Students provide direct health care as well as conducting community needs assessments, community programs, and participating in community based research projects.
