Legal Affairs

The Coordinator, Legal Affairs negotiates and drafts contracts governing the clinical placement of the School’s nursing students in the undergraduate, Master’s and Doctoral programs. Clinical education sites range from large academic medical centers to physicians’ private practices. These sites are located primarily in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Another area of responsibility for the Coordinator, Legal Affairs is the drafting of Professional Services Agreements for faculty consultation and practice in a variety of health care settings. Professional Services Agreements enable faculty to engage in clinical practice, educate students, and conduct research while providing a service to the community.

The School of Nursing partners with a number of hospitals in Maryland to foster the development of hospital nurses as clinical instructors for the School’s students. Agreements outlining the role of these Agency-Based Clinical Instructors are drafted by the Coordinator, Legal Affairs.

The Coordinator, Legal Affairs advises faculty on legal issues involving intellectual property, as well as on issues involving potential liability in patient care situations, often working with legal counsel on campus and in the Maryland Attorney General’s Office. Requests for information on student malpractice insurance and for Certificates of Insurance come through this office.

The Coordinator, Legal Affairs assists the Faculty Council in processing the review and approval of Faculty Associates and Adjunct Faculty appointments, maintaining a database of Associates and Adjuncts who work with School faculty in the education of the School’s students.

The Coordinator, Legal Affairs is the Student Ombudsman for the School of Nursing. Students who have health care conditions that may affect their future careers in nursing are encouraged to discuss their situations, in confidence, with the Ombudsman to explore practice and legal ramifications. The Coordinator, Legal Affairs is also the School’s representative to the campus committee with oversight responsibilities for implementation of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). The Coordinator, Legal Affairs serves on the Campus Review Committee, the body that hears student appeals of administrative decisions of campus offices, such as determination of residency for tuition purposes.
