How to order your new Dell laptop

Go to the special DN-Dell/UMSON Student Computing Store and click on the “Buy Now” button to configure and purchase the laptop. You will also have the option to purchase a variety of accessories for the laptop. You will need your myUMB ID to place an order.

After you receive your new Dell Laptop

While waiting for your laptop to be delivered, you should purchase Symantec EndPoint Protection Antivirus and Microsoft Office software. These two software packages are available from the University of Maryland, Baltimore at a significant discount. To purchase Symantec EndPoint Protection and Microsoft Office software, you must order the software online from the Campus Software Licensing Office. You can pick up the software from the software office on the 5th floor of the HS/HSL. Payment must be made by credit card. You will also need to sign a software license agreement. If you are a distance-learning student that does not come on campus, the software can be shipped to you for an additional charge. Additional details about the discounted software can be found on the CITS website.

When you power on your laptop for the first time, you will be prompted to complete the setup of Windows 7 Professional and to create a user name. This user will have administrative rights on the PC.

To ensure extra security, you should also create a limited user account for yourself using the "User Accounts" icon in the Control Panel. This new account should be created as a "Limited" account type.

If you log on using a limited account for normal daily use, you will help prevent potentially harmful applications (spyware, malware, etc.) from being installed on your laptop. You can log on with the administrative account whenever you need to install Microsoft operating system updates or security updates, new applications, etc.

At this time, you should also change the password of the administrative account. By default, it has no password. This new password should be written down and stored in a safe place that you will easily remember when you need to use it.

Next, you should install the Symantec EndPoint Protection and Microsoft Office software. Guidelines on how to install these two software packages on your new Dell laptop are available on the School of Nursing website.

Students that do not purchase a laptop or that already have a computer and want to purchase software

Discounted software is also available for students that do not purchase a laptop through the School of Nursing Student Laptop Program or that already have a computer. Symantec EndPoint Protection and Microsoft Office can be purchased online from the Campus Software Office and picked up on the 5th floor of the HS/HSL.
