The Department of Organizational Systems and Adult Health at The University of Maryland School of Nursing is currently seeking doctorally prepared, research faculty eligible for appointment to the rank of assistant professor, associate professor or professor. Of particular interest are individuals with programs of research (bench, translational or clinical) related to phenomena of importance to nursing and relevant to two areas: (1) Disorders of neuro-regulatory function and (2) Palliative care, including end of life care. Preference will be given to candidates whose areas of research compliment or extend the research programs of existing faculty.
Qualifications
- Doctorate in nursing or a related field
- Record of scholarly achievement
- Prior teaching experience preferred
- Post-doctoral training preferred
- Nurse faculty: eligible for RN licensure in Maryland and a master’s degree in nursing
Responsibilities
- Ongoing scholarly contributions (e.g., program of research, successful grantsmanship, scholarly publications, presentations at a national or international level, mentorship of students and faculty, etc.).
- Participate actively in the School’s teaching mission at the undergraduate and/or graduate program levels ( BS, RN to BS/MS, MS, PhD, DNP)
- Participate actively in departmental, SON and University committees and task forces.
The School of Nursing, one of the largest in the country, is ranked 7th among the top ten schools in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. It enrolls over 1400 students (Fall 2006: BSN–675, MS–646, PhD–63, DNP-17). The Organizational Systems and Adult Health department is actively involved in the SON’s undergraduate and graduate programs. It offers a diverse array of masters programs including Adult Health NP, Geriatric NP, Oncology Nursing, Trauma/Critical Care (CNS, NP), Nurse Anesthesia, Health Services Leadership and Management, Nursing Informatics, and Clinical Research Management programs. The department has also amassed researchers in a Developing Center of Excellence in Disorders of Neuro-regulatory Function and a Developing Center for Palliative Care Research.
Center for Research on the Disorders of Neuroregulatory Function. The overarching goal of the Center is to advance the science of disorders of neuroregulatory function from an interdisciplinary perspective that integrates basic science and clinical investigation methodologies Areas of expertise of the Center investigators encompass a broad range of basic science methods, that include molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, microscopy and imaging techniques, as well as, clinical science methods that include human physiological measures, observational and experimental study designs.
Center for Palliative Care Research. The mission of the Center is to advance the science of palliative care across the lifespan in various populations, disease trajectories, and settings. The long-term goal of the Center is to improve palliative care through interdisciplinary collaborative research that addresses structure and processes of care and the physical, psychosocial, spiritual, cultural, ethical, and legal aspects of care in order to influence social and public policy.
The School’s Office of Research provides an organized infrastructure designed to support and facilitate research excellence and creates synergy between researchers and research efforts. The office provides technical advice to support the initial and ongoing sponsored research of faculty and graduate students, provides scientific overview of sponsored research proposals, identifies new sources of funding, and disseminates relevant research findings.
In addition to the SON, the University of Maryland, Baltimore campus encompasses five other professional schools – Dentistry, Law, Medicine, Pharmacy and Social Work and is one of the fastest growing health sciences research centers in the United States. The unique composition of the campus enables health professionals to address health care, public policy and social issues through multidisciplinary research, scholarship and community action. Its location in the Baltimore-Washington-Annapolis triangle maximizes opportunities for collaboration with government agencies, health care institutions and life sciences industries.
