Associate Dean for Research

The University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON) is seeking an Associate Dean for Research to lead the School’s research and scholarship mission. Consistently ranked among the top schools of nursing in the nation by U.S.News & World Report, UMSON enrolls more than 1,700 students in its baccalaureate, master’s, doctoral, and continuing education programs. In 2013, UMSON was ranked 9th in NIH funding among schools and colleges of nursing. Faculty research targets priority health issues including function and mobility in the elderly, pain and symptom science, substance-abuse and other stress-related disorders, consumer informatics, end-of-life care, patient-centered outcomes, implementation science, worksite health promotion, sleep disorders, and translational multi-omics childbirth outcomes. Two UMSON Research Centers support faculty mentorship and research--The Center for Health Outcomes and the Center of Biology and Behavior Across the Lifespan. UMB encompasses five other professional schools – Dentistry, Law, Medicine, Pharmacy, and Social Work, supporting interprofessional collaboration and education. The adjacent University of Maryland Medical Center is part of a multi-hospital system that includes affiliated community and specialty clinics. Faculty in the UMB schools generated $479.8 million in extramural funding in FY13, contributing to important advances in basic science and applied research. UMB’s location in the Baltimore-Washington-Annapolis triangle supports unparalleled opportunities for collaboration with government agencies, health care institutions, and life sciences industries, as well as active participation in health policy development.


  • Provide leadership in development, implementation, and evaluation of strategies for achieving UMSON’s research and scholarship goals
  • Facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration among UMB researchers and external researchers
  • Develop a well-structured faculty mentoring program, encompassing orientation, workshops, and seminars
  • Maintain an active external grant portfolio
  • Provide oversight for research and scholarship including compliance with university procedures and regulatory mandates
  • Seek partnerships with health care agencies and industry in the conduct of research programs that address societal needs
  • Maintain an active research presence, representing the School in the local, national, and international scientific communities


  • Earned doctorate in nursing or related field
  • Evidence of progressive scholarly achievements, including data-based publications, current funding, and a successful program of extramurally funded research
  • Demonstrated success in the administration of research projects
  • Experience in interdisciplinary research collaboration
  • Record of promoting the development of other researchers
