General Information

Financial assistance is offered by the School of Nursing; the University of Maryland, Baltimore; and external agencies. There are a wide variety of financial resources to assist you in meeting your educational goals and expenses. You may be eligible for both merit and need-based financial aid. Information regarding specific funding sources is listed below.

Merit Scholarships

All students are considered for merit scholarships at the time of acceptance into a degree program. The Scholarship Committee uses the admission application and accompanying material to determine eligibility for a merit scholarship. There is no additional application to complete. These highly competitive merit scholarships are for full-time enrollment and are renewable for the length of an entire degree program as long as appropriate satisfactory academic progress is maintained. Scholarships range from $1,000 per year to full tuition.

Federal Programs

Funds are available through the federal government in the form of grants, low-interest loans and work-study. The UMB Office of Financial Aid processes applications for federal financial aid. To apply for federal funds, complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The federal code for the University of Maryland School of Nursing is 002104. The Student Guide (Financial Aid from the US Department of Education) is available online at www.studentaid.ed.gov. Information on nursing loan repayment is available toll-free at (866)813-3753 or at www.bhpr.hrsa.gov.

State of Maryland Programs

Scholarship and grant money is available through the state of Maryland. Funds are both merit and need-based. To apply, you must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and list the University of Maryland School of Nursing (federal code 002104). Out-of-state residents can apply for tuition assistance to reduce tuition from out-of-state rates to in-state rates — a significant saving. This program has a Maryland, post-graduate service requirement. If you are interested in this program or any of the other state of Maryland programs, visit the Maryland Higher Education Commission on the web, or call 800-974-1024 or 410-260-4565.
