University of Maryland School of Nursing

The University of Maryland School of Nursing was established in 1889 under the direction of Louisa Parsons, a student of Florence Nightingale’s School of Nursing in London. The University of Maryland School of Nursing provides educational programs in nursing leading to bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. The School is consistently ranked among the nation’s top 10 schools of nursing, and five of the master’s specialties—Nursing Administration, Adult Nurse Practitioner, Gerontological Nurse Practitioner, Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing and Community/Public Health Nursing—are also ranked in the top 10.

University of Maryland, Baltimore

The School of Nursing is located on the Baltimore campus of the University of Maryland, which is the University’s founding campus. Established in 1807, the University of Maryland, Baltimore, is one of the largest public universities in the nation. The campus includes six professional schools—Dental, Law, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Social Work, in addition to the Graduate School, the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Systems, the University of Maryland Medical Center and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The University of Maryland, Baltimore, enrolls nearly 6,000 students taught by more than 2,000 faculty members.

Health Sciences and Human Services Library

Distinguished as the first library established by a medical school in the United States, the Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HS/HSL) is a recognized leader in state-of-the-art information technology, providing both traditional and digital information resources and services. As the Southeastern/Atlantic Region Medical Library of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, the HS/HSL serves 10 southeastern states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

Computer Resources

In addition to the School of Nursing’s computer resources, computing support is provided for microcomputer and mainframe users through the University. Free e-mail accounts are provided to each student.

The City of Baltimore and Surrounding Area

The City of Baltimore offers countless professional opportunities, as well as a stimulating environment in which to live and study. The nationally acclaimed Inner Harbor area, which includes Harborplace, the National Aquarium, the Maryland Science Center and a host of restaurants and night-life venues, is located several blocks from the campus.

Baltimore boasts world-class museums, including the Walters Art Gallery and the Baltimore Museum of Art, and fine music and theater at the Lyric Opera House, the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, Center Stage, the newly renovated Hippodrome Theatre, and smaller theatre and repertory companies. For sports fans, Baltimore features Orioles major league baseball and Ravens NFL football, with both stadiums located a few short blocks from the campus. Baltimore is also home to the Baltimore Blast professional indoor soccer team.

The School’s strategic location in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. corridor, including its proximity to the nation’s capital, provides unparalleled opportunities for student participation in governmental, cultural and policy-related activities.

The Baltimore Metro Subway and the Light Rail system connect downtown Baltimore to surrounding areas of the city. MARC trains link Baltimore with Washington, D.C., and Amtrak service connects Baltimore with Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York City and Boston. Baltimore is 45 miles northeast of greater Washington, D.C., approximately 100 miles south of Philadelphia, and 180 miles southwest of New York City. The Baltimore-Washington International Airport is located approximately 15 miles south of the city.
