The School of Nursing and Dell are offering a Latitude laptop computer at a discounted price. The Latitude computers that are offered to nursing students include the following:

Order Laptop

To order your DELL Laptop:

  1. Go to: DN-Dell/UMSON Student Computing Store 
  2. Click on the “Shop Now” button to configure and purchase the laptop
  3. Choose which computer you wish to choose
  4. Choose your extra options
  5. Use your myUMB ID to place an order

After Receiving Laptop

While waiting for your laptop to be delivered read "Purchasing Information for Adobe, Microsoft & Symantec Software for Personally-owned Computers"

  1. To Purchase Software, you must order the software online from and payment must be made by credit card:
  2. Choose Software
    • Symantec EndPoint Protection Antivirus and
    • Microsoft Office software

These two software packages are available from the University of Maryland, Baltimore at a significant discount.

You can pick up the software from the software office on the 5th floor of the HS/HSL.

NOTE: If you are a distance-learning student that does not come on campus, the software can be shipped to you for an additional charge.

When you power on your laptop for the first time, you will be prompted to complete the setup of Windows 7 Professional and to create a user name. This user will have administrative rights on the PC.

To ensure extra security:

  1. You should also create a limited user account for yourself using the "User Accounts" icon in the Control Panel.
    1. This new account should be created as a "Limited" account type.
    2. Logging on with "Limited" account for normal daily use, you will help prevent potentially harmful applications (spyware, malware, etc.) from being installed on your laptop.
    3. Log on with the "Administrative" account whenever you need to install Microsoft operating system updates or security updates, new applications, etc.
    4. Change the password of the "Administrative" account. NOTE: By default, it has no password. This new password should be written down and stored in a safe place that you will easily remember when you need to use it.
  2. Install the Symantec EndPoint Protection and Microsoft Office software.
